Artist statement

I loved writing and painting as a child in communist Romania, but the political and social climate before and after the Revolution of 1989 was not a good emotional and mental space for me to develop as an artist. Later, my art journey began as a response to a debilitating anxiety disorder I’ve been living with for years, involving the process of eating. At first, painting was a form of relief, but over time, and somewhat unexpectedly, through years of psychotherapy, it became something deeper: an exploration rather than an escape.

Drawing on memories, emotions, and elements that surface during my therapy sessions, my work investigates how we navigate and internalize external influences, particularly the shifting landscapes of politics and society, through abstract and surreal imagery.

My practice includes drawing, painting, and collage, with a special focus on bringing writing, both semantic and asemic, into my visual work. Semantic writing allows me to articulate autobiographical narratives in an understandable form for the viewer, while asemic writing is a way of expressing inner states and emotions difficult to capture in words.

I’m drawn to fluid materials like inks, watercolour, and acrylics because they mirror the fluidity of the emotional space I often explore. At the same time, I love experimenting with pencils, pastels, and textiles, which reflect my mix of interests - from mental health and psychological development to transformation, identity, belonging, and even food and textiles education. I usually work on paper or unstretched canvas, as I think of my art as a kind of writing.
